The next morning, she took a good look at her reflection in the river. She was a tiny bit slimmer, but that wasn’t what caught her attention. “Oh, look at my hair.”

Waco leaned against a tree and grinned. “You look like you’ve been dragged under the porch by a pack of hound dogs, but I don’t care. Maybe you could wash it some.”

She gestured helplessly. “Wash my own hair? I’ve always had a maid to take care of my hair.”

“Too bad. It’s about time you got more independent.”

She looked down at her scarecrow clothes. “These are filthy and so am I. Eww!”

“Tell you what,” Waco offered. “Tom’s gone into town to see if there’s a message from your daddy, and Zeb and Zeke are in the cabin. If you want to wash your clothes and take a bath in the river, I promise not to peek.”

She couldn’t imagine any man would want to watch a plump girl take a bath, but she wouldn’t take the chance. “Get me some soap and a towel.”

When Waco returned, he was more than a little disappointed. Rosemary had only pulled off her outer layer and knelt by the river in her corset cover and lace drawers. She was attempting to untangle her hair. “I’ve got a curry comb,” he offered.

“Just leave the towel and soap and go away,” she ordered. “My mother would be turning over in her grave at a man seeing me in my underwear.”

“I can’t really see anything.” Waco smiled. “Your modesty is purty safe.”

“Go away.” She took the soap and began to wash the faded plaid shirt and rub it against a big rock.

Waco didn’t go very far. He retreated partway up the hill and sat down under a tree. From here, he could see the outline of full breasts and a pleasing round rear as she scrubbed her clothes and hung them over a branch to dry. Then she waded out into the river and wet her hair. “Watch out,” he called, “there’s some holes out there. Can you swim?”

“Of course not. If I could swim, I’d escape down the river.”

“Uh-huh.” He watched her. She was getting a little too deep for comfort. “Missy, that water has a current ahead of you. Stop right there. It’s deep enough to wash in.”

“Stop telling me what to do!” And about that time, she stepped into a hole.

“Oh, hell!” Waco threw away his smoke and ran for the river. He pulled off his boots and dove in as she came up again, gasping and coughing. He grabbed her and she hung on to him, terror on her round face. “I told you it was deep, don’t you listen to anything?”

She came up choking as he dragged her toward the edge. “This is all your fault!”

“My fault?” He laid her on the ground and pounded her back. “I warned you about the holes.”

“Stop beating me!” She half turned and slapped at his big hands.

“I’m not beatin’ you! I’m tryin’ to get half that river out of you.
